Labradorite

Updated: Jul 22

beautiful labradorite with a blue iridescence

Of course, I had to write about my favorite crystal.

This is my personal favorite.

Why?

The appearance is the first thing that drew me to this crystal. The other reason is this crystal is used to take your spiritual journey to new heights and protection. I will explain this further in this article. I also included some fun topics such as folklore and the history of the crystal in different cultures.

labradorite

I don't doubt this will become your new favorite as well.

Please keep in mind any information here should never be used to replace professional medical advice.

What does this mystical stone look like?

At first glance, the more common stone appears white, grey, or even somewhat black. The outside appearance will depend on the size and how polished the stone is. At the center of the stone shines something more enchanting. This is called labradorescence, where the stone will reflect certain colors from the light. Commonly you will see blue, green, yellow, orange, and even red reflected. However, green and blue are more abundant in most stones. The rare colors are fuchsia and purple.

Other Varieties include:

White Labradorite

White labradorite is known for its ability to bring balance. Similar to classic labradorite, it has a transparent base and luminous flashes on a white background. It does display the same green, orange, mauve, and blue reflections. Its alias is rainbow moonstone, although do not confuse it with actual moonstone.

Spectrolite is rare and unique to Finland. This is the most valuable and vibrantly colored as it can show a full spectrum of rainbow colors. It has a much darker black base and is considered a semi-precious gem.

It is important to be careful when purchasing this variety. Some vendors may try to market some more iridescent labradorites as this variety to catch a higher price. One method to checking authenticity is if it's not from Finland its not a true spectrolite.

Properties

Its energies promote overall well-being and balance, both physically and emotionally.

Physically the stone is said to support the immune system, enhance vitality, and aid in the recovery of various ailments. Some believe Labradorite can help alleviate symptoms of respiratory conditions, regulate metabolism, and promote healthy digestion.

Mentally the gemstone is believed to have a calming effect, reducing stress and anxiety and promoting inner peace. Labradorite's transformative energy can encourage personal growth.

Spiritually, the stone has the ability to heighten spiritual intuition and psychic gifts. It eliminates fears and insecurities increasing faith in your own abilities and is a powerful tool for protection. This makes it a popular stone for bracelets and jewelry.

The stones can open the crown and third eye chakras allowing for a connection to higher realms.

In traditional Hindu belief systems, Labradorite is related to the throat chakra. This chakra is associated with hearing, speech, self-expression, and creativity. When this chakra is open, negative experiences will be changed into positive ones and replaced with wisdom and learning. Opening up this chakra is said to bring about various psychic abilities to help communication between the physical and metaphysical worlds.

Folklore and Legends

There are so many amazing and mystical legends of labradorite. I imagine many people throughout history were just as captivated by this stone as I am. From the heart of Atlantis to the holder of the galaxy; the legends are fascinating.

Our first set of stories will focus on the aurora borealis. The legends of the lights are vast, but a couple involve this magical stone. Some Ancient Inuits believed that Labradorite was the frozen fire of the Aurora Borealis. An Inuit warrior found a cave with the Aurora Borealis embedded within the rocks, on the shoreline of Labrador, Canada. He attempted to release the Aurora Borealis with his spear but could not remove it all, leaving some of the light still in the stone for all of time.

In Norse mythology, it was associated with the 'Bifrost Bridge', a burning rainbow bridge that joined 'Midgard' (Earth) to 'Asgard' (the realm of the gods) – a gateway between Earth and heaven.

Other legends and stories lack many sources and may just be good old modern storytelling.

Now, let's talk about this interesting theory. As a fellow mermaid and ocean lover this theory captured my attention. This story says that those who are attracted to this stone have their ancestral roots in the lost city of Atlantis! It has been called the heart of Atlantis and the stone is said to be even more extraordinary under the sea.

Another story says the stone is directly from the galaxies and that the stone has been found in some meteorites.

Some have said that artifacts were found in Maine, dating to around the year 1000, that show the use of Labradorite by the Algonquin tribe

Whether legend or truth, Labradorite remains a mystical beauty.
